Yalumba

The story of Yalumba is the
story of a family. It was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, a brewer
from Dorset, who, just two years before had arrived in Australia
with his wife and children. Samuel found work in the sparsely populated
Barossa Valley, but soon saved enough money to purchase 30 acres
of his own. He named his small property "Yalumba", an
Aboriginal word meaning "all the land around", and, together
with his young son Sidney, began planting vines. Today, Samuel's
great great grandsons Robert and Sam, nurture the traditions that
began 155 years ago. The vineyards have expanded to over 1000 acres
and the company has grown significantly, but one thing remains set
in stone, against share market floats, mergers and acquisitions,
Yalumba is still Australia's oldest family owned winery. Samuel's
pioneering spirit and tenacity are still evident all these years
later. Yalumba continues to produce distinctive wines of great character
and quality, marketed in Australia and internationally. There's
little doubt that Samuel would approve.
