Vasse Felix took its unusual
name from an early event in the district. Thomas Vasse was a French
seaman who disappeared last century after a longboat overturned
near the site of Busselton while exploring the coastline - an expedition
of Captain Hamelin's Naturaliste and Captain Baudin's Geographe.
Ironically, Felix is the Latin word for lucky, as well as being
Hamelin's middle name. Vasse Felix was the first commercial vineyard
and winery to be established in the Margaret River region of Western
Australia. In the early 1960s, the region was identified as ideal
for viticulture and in 1967, Dr Tom Cullity planted the original
Vasse Felix vines. A leader in the internationally recognised Margaret
River region, Vasse Felix wines have a reputation for consistent
and award winning quality. Vasse Felix was purchased by the Holmes
a Court family in 1987.
