IJohann Christian Henschke (born
1803) arrived in South Australia in 1841 from Kutschlau, Silesia
(Germany). With his son Paul Gotthard (b. 1847) he made his first
wines in the mid 1860s and in 1868 recorded the first wine sale.
Paul Gotthard continued making table wines through the turn of the
century, as the winery gradually grew. When Paul Alfred (b. 1878)
took over in 1914, the shiraz vines which still produce the famous
Hill of Grace were over 50 years old. His youngest son Cyril Alfred
(b1924) became a pioneer of varietal table wines. Today, Henschke
Cellars is under the control of fifth-generation Stephen Henschke,
who continues the proud heritage and philosophy for outstanding
quality.
