Brown
Brothers
www.brownbrothers.com.au
In over one hundred years of
growing grapes and making wine, the Brown family has forged an enviable
reputation, locally and abroad, as varietal wine specialists and
viticultural and winemaking innovators. Even though the North East
of Victoria, indeed the entire Australian wine industry at the end
of the 1800s had made its reputation on the production of generously
flavoured fortified wines, John Francis decided the future of the
Milawa Estate lay in the production of fine table wines. His foresight
and willingness to experiment with new grape varieties was inherited
by his son, John Charles Brown, who took over the reins of the vineyard
in 1934 and ran the operation until he in turn was joined by his
sons in the 1960s and 1970s. Together they explored new grape varieties
and new grape growing regions around Milawa, the King Valley, the
Alps, and out onto the sunny plains of northern Victoria. The family
found climatic and soil conditions so diverse that they successfully
grow over 45 different commercial and experimental grape varieties.
